A guard dog can be another security system, however there are pros and cons.

They alert the owner before the burglar gets to the house
No service fees
By barking they let the neighborhood know
Dogs are portable
Cons

Guard dogs need training and attention
Dogs age
Burglars can cleverly distract dogs
Guard dogs can be unpredictable
